Company History

In 1957, Scotian Gold Cooperative Limited was formed to take over the operation of The United Fruit Companies of Nova Scotia Limited (UFC).  UFC was created in 1912 as an amalgamation of many apple companies and cooperatives dotted along the line of the Dominion Atlantic Railway.  The name “Scotian Gold” came from a company established in 1931, Scotian Gold Products Limited which was involved in the production of apple juice and other soft drinks.  Scotian Gold Products Limited was acquired by The United Fruit Companies of Nova Scotia.  “Scotian Gold” was recognized as a valuable brand name and was used to brand both fresh apples and processed apple products through the 1930’s to 1950’s.  On July 5, 1957, the strength of the brand name was carried forward into the name of the new cooperative company, Scotian Gold Cooperative Limited.

Scotian Gold has always been involved with apples and apple products.  It is locally owned and controlled and envisions a strong future in the Nova Scotia apple industry.

Celebrations

Who wouldn't’t celebrate a 50-year milestone?  When you’re 95 years old, 50 sounds really young!

Scotian Gold has been an important part of the apple history in Nova Scotia.  Some of our history is captured in an Anniversary Brochure that was presented at a celebration for staff and growers both past and present held on Thursday, July 5, 2007 at the Head Office at 2900 Lovett Road in Coldbrook.  This celebration included a pork BBQ and was the launch of the “Scotian Gold Commemorative Garden” to be an ongoing recognition of people and events.
