Golden Delicious Apples

You may think that Golden Delicious and Red Delicious apples are related, but they’re not. The first honey sweet Golden Delicious apple tree was discovered in the late 19th century by a West Virginia farmer who found the lonely tree on a hillside near Odessa. It is thought the tree may have originated from the seed of Grimes Golden, a 19th century apple from the US. Stark Brothers nursery in Missouri made the Golden Delicious apple famous after they bought the tree and developed an orchard from that one original tree.
Not only is Golden Delicious a very popular apple today, many new apple varieties have been raised from it. Crispin, Gala and Jonagold have been developed from the Golden Delicious.
Golden Delicious apples have a crisp, light yellow flesh and can be exceptionally sweet and rich and very juicy. A versatile apple, use Golden Delicious in desserts and cooking. They make delicious applesauce and are very good in pies and baked goods. Because the apple is so sweet, you can cut back on the sugar called for in recipes for pie and sauce when using Golden Delicious apples. |
