The Red Delicious apple goes back to 1880 when it was discovered in an orchard in Iowa. Since then it has become an important commercial apple variety in North America.

Red Delicious apples have a unique tall conical shape narrowing to a five-point base, making them very easy to identify. A sweet apple, with a very mild flavour, Red Delicious apples are best eaten fresh.

The offspring of Red Delicious include Fuji, Empire. In the past few years, Scotian Gold growers have been growing another Red Delicious offspring, the Sonya apple.
