The story of Honeycrisp apples in the Annapolis Valley is one of being in the right place at the right time. In February 1996, Scotian Gold's Larry Lutz was in Washington State with several Scotian Gold apple growers. They were invited to try a "new" apple that had been sitting in a fridge since being harvested in early fall. They gave the apple a try and after biting into it, bought all available trees and had them shipped back to Nova Scotia. And the rest is history. The Honeycrisp apple was developed at the University of Minnesota, so it was suited for a climate like ours. The pleasant surprise was that our beautiful Valley fall weather is optimum for Honeycrisp apple growth. The combination of warm, sunny days and cool night results in big juicy, sweet apples with a beautiful red colour.
Almost all of our apple growers now include Honeycrisp trees in their orchard mix. We'll be harvesting in October so we won't have long to wait to bite into a juicy Scotian Gold Honeycrisp apple!
