Sonny was born and raised on a mixed farm in Pictou County, Nova Scotia. He attended the Nova Scotia Agriculture College earning a degree in Bio-Lab Technology and a B.Sc Agriculture majoring in Plant Science and minoring in Pest Management. Sonny joined Scotian Gold in 2001 in agriculture sales. His areas of expertise include soil fertility, nutrient management planning, foliar feeding programs, plastic culture and corn and soybean seed sales. Sonny has served as Chairperson on the Atlantic Certified Crops Advisor Board as well as many of its committees and is a past member of the Nova Scotia Agricultural College Alumni Association. Sonny is a Certified Crop Advisor, Certified Nutrient Management Planner as well as a Professional Agrologist.
